The same can be said for information security – more specifically, evaluating the legitimacy of email and Web traffic: diverse collections of independently-gathered data produce the most accurate view. |

James Suroieki’s book: The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations (Random House, 2005) makes the point that the collective opinions and knowledge of large numbers of people do better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, and predicting the future than even the best and brightest of individuals, working one at a time or in small groups. This phenomenon also extends into information security, where large numbers of systems and monitors create a virtual analog for the same crowds that Surowieki describes in his book, and establishes an information base that permits security threats and vulnerabilities to be recognized and responded to – on a global scale, in near-real time.
